Recently i've been reading about and listening to a lot of music. Most likely because that is pretty much all there is to do, other than revision. Which I frankly try to avoid at all costs. The overall effect of spending around 80% of my free time on NME.com has lead me to write this post, which will most likely be me blabbing about music. That, in case you were wondering, was your warning.
I can look back at music in two ways. The first being what I have experienced in my lifetime, as new music - this is from about 2000 to 2009 - because I can't really remember further back than that. Or the second option is that I look back at it regardless as whether I was alive or not. I am pretty sure that the music I have heard, whether I loved or hated it, from before 2000 had something to offer. Albums such as 'Born To Run', 'All Mod Cons', 'Ziggy Stardust', 'Pet Sounds', 'Revolver' and 'London Calling' all did something different and that's what made them special. But i'm afraid to say that since 2000 - 2009 I can barely name one album that will be remembered in 30 years time. I hope that maybe 'Whatever People Say I Am...' (Arctic Monkeys) & 'Franz Ferdinand' might be remembered as trying something a bit different. Or even some smaller albums as 'We'll Live And Die In These Towns' (The Enemy), 'Vehicles & Animals' (Athlete) etc... not for doing anything new, but for making a ruddy good record. Other than that I can only really think of Green Day's 'American Idiot' as being remembered. I guess there are a few other bands that have produced some albums that might last a while, but not being nearly as successful as ones by Bowie & The Beatles... Maybe i'm just being bitter because I know we may never hear an album as good as 'All Mod Cons' again. Or maybe because people like Pixie Lott and Lady Gaga are making our top ten.
But on a more positive note, Blur are back, Arctic Monkeys have a new album coming out soon and Oasis are finally writing amazing music again. So you never know, maybe the iconic album is just around the corner...
